Proof of Life: Artists and Designers

Curated by Charlene Lam of Creative Clerkenwell, the PROOF OF LIFE exhibition (20-25 Oct, 2015) explores the themes of love and loss, grief and memory through the work of London artists and designers.

Based in Clerkenwell, Andrew English is a young jeweller whose signature fingerprint-engraved rings and pendants are popular with engaged couples and forensic scientists alike.

Emily Jo Gibbs is a British Artist who over the last two decades has established an international reputation for her exquisite textile-based work. Examples of her work are in several museum collections including the V&A, London and The Museum of Fine Art, Houston.

In memory of her mother, curator Charlene Lam commissioned illustrator Mercedes Leon to produce a series of prints cataloging the mementos of a life well-lived. Mercedes Leon graduated with a MA in Visual Arts in 2012 from Camberwell College (UAL).

Trained as a couture pattern-cutter, Phil Davison comes by his fascination with skulls honestly, having worked in a mortuary in his youth. Each artwork can take over 7 months and tens of thousands of hand stitches to complete. He’s the founder of Urban Cross Stitch and author of Twisted Stitches: 30 Corrupt Cross Stitch and Embroidery Designs.

Charlene Lam is a design consultant, artist, writer and freelance curator from New York City. She has degrees in mass communications and textile/surface design. Her artwork has appeared in exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Textiles Art Center (Brooklyn, NY), Bildmuseet (UmeƄ, Sweden) and the Museum of Craft & Folk Art (San Francisco, CA).
